Our ministry was not necessary in Biblical times

Talk about physically fit

Did you know that when we track the Apostle Paul’s missionary journeys it is estimated that he walked over 50,000 miles in a few short years. At times he was averaging 40-50 miles per day! In tracking Jesus’ travels, in Mark chapters five and six, He walked 120 miles in three days. Jesus once walked from Sidon-Tyre region to the Sea of Galilee, approximately 40 miles, through rough terrain in one day. (This is the equivalent of 17 minute miles).

We also know − by virtue of the length of time Jesus lived, in spite of the horrific physical torture and abuse He endured during his crucifixion − that He was in exceptional shape physically. That level of fitness undoubtedly began in His youth as a carpenter.

Talk about fat and out of shape

Today, Americans sit on the average of 14-16 hours a day! And remember, on top of that we're sleeping for another 6-8 hours. No wonder recent studies show that 60% of Americans are sedentary!

The greatest problem for all of us living in twenty first century America, is that we are not moving on a daily basis in the way God designed our bodies to move. Elevators, escalators, automobiles, golf carts, remote controls, gas fireplaces … all these things make life easier but they are leaving our bodies behind.

Some of us remember when you had to physically pull the garage door open, then after backing the car out, get out, walk back, and physically pull the garage door closed. Wow! Those were the days! Then, after getting back in the car, you had to crank a handle to roll down the window to cool off. Today you just push a button! Though these may seem like little things, they all add up.

220 years ago (our nations birth) 95% of the energy output of this country was from the human body. Today it is less than 1%!

Today in America, by age 70, one third of all men and two thirds of all women cannot lift an object over 10 pounds!
