The Bible says that we are "outwardly wasting away" (Psalm 89:48), meaning that the earth-suit God has given us (our body), is slowly deteriorating and will ultimately disappear. (Psalm 102:25-28) So spiritually we're growing, and physically we're failing. (2 Cor. 4:14-18) That makes things pretty clear regarding what our priority should be as Christians as it relates to the time, effort, and commitment we give to our personal development, both spiritually and physically. Spiritual development trumps physical development every time! (1 Tim. 4:8)
God created our marvelous bodies. We are fearfully and wonderfully made − in His image! (Psalm 139:13-15) Also, we were created to do good works. God carefully prepared in advance, a specific mission, unique to our individual capabilities, that we are to complete for His Glory. (Eph. 2:10) We can only carry out this mission successfully if we allow the Holy Spirit, who is living in us, to exercise the power of God through the life we live here on earth. So even though the spiritual is more important than the physical, our ability to do all we're called to do spiritually, is inseparably linked to our ability to carry it out physically. (1 Cor. 6:19-20)
And finally, whatever God has given you, you are responsible for taking good care of it. (Luke 12:48b) If you do not take good care of your body, you will suffer all of the negative consequences associated with your bad choices. (Gal. 6:7)

“Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.”
1 Corinthians 6:19-20
